October-November Courses & Workshops (& National Short Story Week) Lewes, East Sussex

Upcoming Courses & Workshops

(October through November)

I've just put the finishing touches on two new 6-week courses and a one-day workshop which have been designed to run during National Short Story Week, from the 7th to the 13th of November.  You might have seen or otherwise heard of the recent campaign, supported by the Society of Authors, which is in opposition to BBC Radio 4's announcement to cut some of their short story programming.  The timing is rather ironic given that this is slated to happen in the lead up to National Short Story Week (NSSW).

Anyway, in support of NSSW as well as the short story literary form, in general, I decided to organize the following:  1) 'The Best British Short Stories 2011' (on the NSSW recommended reading list) reading and discussion course, 2) a 'Short Story Writing, from A to Z' Course, and 3) a 'National Short Story Week' Writing Workshop.  All three of these will run during National Short Story Week, though the first two begin in mid-October, while the writing workshop will be held on Saturday, 12 November.  I've been put in touch with Nicholas Royle, the award-winning editor of the book pictured above, and he wishes us all the best with the Best British Short Stories 2011 course.  So that's quite auspicious!

Full details, including dates and times, are included via the links above, or visit the fully updated Courses & Workshops listing.

I've also decided to run the next Friday Fling reading and discussion course on Eckhart Tolle's international beststeller, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment.  As usual, this 6-week course will run Fridays from 8 to 10 pm, a most cordial time for an end-of-week gathering.

There's plenty of time to order The Best British Short Stories 2011 (£5.96) and The Power of Now (£5.49). Click either of the two previous links to go directly to the relevant page on  Both books include free Super Saver Delivery within the UK.  Mufidah's and my two copies of The Best British Short Stories 2011 recently arrived, and we're enjoying the stories which Nicholas Royle collected into this one pocket-sized anthology.  For the course, we'll read three to four stories to discuss in class each week.  That amounts to thirty to forty pages a week of pleasurable reading which can be taken in bite-sized chunks when the time suits you, one of the great advantages of the short story form.

Also, we'll be exhibiting our Creative Writing & Mindful Living Guide wares at the Mind Body Spirit Festival in Hove this Saturday and Sunday.  As I've been invited to give a half-hour talk, I've decided, as I did at the same event held earlier this year, to turn this talk into a (free) mini-writing workshop.  This is scheduled to run from 12.30 to 1.00 pm tomorrow, Saturday 24 September.  So, if you'll be in Hove this weekend, or would like to make a little day trip there, please join us for the workshop or just stop by our table and say hello.  The festival is in Hove Centre at Hove Town Hall.

And, finally, I've just posted a short short story.  I wrote this in honor of a dear friend who's just turned 92.
